Ladder climbing

"Not everybody will succeed at becoming a bigshot and when you see your professional life only as a ladder climbing, the chances are that rather than becoming a famous man and a big operator directing twenty people to work on your brilliant ideas you end up as unhappy mid-management overweight pencil-pusher making flowcharts for your business elk superiors while fending off fellow back-stabbers. I have seen group bosses of this unhappy kind losing their job, in their late 40s or early 50s - and there are almost no job openings available to them and they cannot go back to bench either. So maybe for awhile they were making 50k more than you did and they have more expensive mortgage and now they got no job prospects.

I am not discouraging people from trying to make the best of their career and life, but in industry a merger can do nasty things with your best plans, irrespective how good you were you may not get valued by the new corporate masters - and you may find that all those years of ladder climbing were for nothing and after you gave your company the best part of your life, after you projected your aspirations into your project and spent many weekends to make it a success, you get dropped like worn-out tool."

ex-KGVers - can you help me identify this person?

So I was reading my old xanga posts and reminiscing about the "good old days", the days when we were still at school and everyone used xanga and there was not yet facebook, youtube or electricity. Happy was I to recall anew how wittily and funnily I used to write...now I can't even put together a decent pun like how I did in a January 2nd, 2003 post about "Spiderman".

"I thought the romance was a bit far-fetched. Mary-jane fell in love with like, what, 4 guys in the space of months? 'Flash', harry osborn, peter parker, and spiderman - yes I know they're the same, but not to her right? Pete was right to reject her in the end, if they went out he'll probably get dumped in a few weeks, for Pete's sake (ha ha ha)." - emphasis mine, pun INTENDED!!!

Anyway, the main purpose of this post is to ask if any KGVers can identify this mystery comment from a January 30, 2003 posting on how I beat Hugh for the first (and only) time in a race over 100 metres. No seriously that is the true intention of post and not to brag about how the whole reason I decided to pick up running in the first place was to challenge the seemingly invincible 6-year reign of King Hugh in endurance running events. And how I had finally fulfilled my dream on that sweet Spring day. Ahhh....that glorious day of Upsdell domination. More like a massacre! The 1-2-3 punch of Hugh-Sam-Dan deserves to forever enshrined in the annals of Upsdell lore...(by the way if you guys have the pic of the three of us on the podium that would be great). Readers can read about all the gory details in the link above. Fond recollections, but alas, that would be the only time I would defeat Hugh in a race, and while I stopped running altogether after leaving KGV (after reaching my life's destiny that fateful day), Hugh would probably run and swim until he's 90.

Anyway, I really enjoy using "anyway" as a way to return to the main topic after a sidetrack, which unfortunately is an all-too-common occurrence given my rambly nature. Anyway, the main topic of this post was to ask my dear readers from KGV if they recognise the gentlemen who left an insightful comment on my race report that day but has since abandoned his xanga, taking away with him his name but not his words.

Here is the comment:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"haha...congrats on beating hugh....u deserved it with all your efforts.  i would have loved to watch the race instead of running it (cuz i didn't see how you beat hugh, but instead saw how countless people trying to overtake me).

and too bad i didn't get to run against you in the 4X400m, cuz i couldn't recover from the 4X100m, which was like a minute before.  well, maybe i will c u around in the standard chartered.  depends whether i have picked my form back up by then....

btw, great imagination of the upsdell domination....but the nightingale era of winning everything is back!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From this comment, I have gathered that:

1. He is in the class of 2003.
2. He ran the 800m and 4x100m finals.
3. He wanted to run in the 4x400m but was too tired.
4. He was thinking of running the Standard Chartered marathon.
5. He is probably in Nightingale.

Given all these clues I should probably should remember but I really have no idea...my apologies so that person. I think that is why people these days term an "epic fail".

Any takers?

Yes and no.

An Italian showgirl and bikini model is selling her virginity — for $1.8 million.

Raffella Fico, 20, told an Italian magazine she was offering herself up for one million euros to help pay for acting classes and insisted she had never had sex before.

"I can't wait to see who's going to pull out the money to have me," Fico said to magazine Chi.

The Naples-born model, who achieved fame this year on the Italian version of Big Brother, said she would make good on her promise even if the buyer turned out to be unattractive.

"If I don't like him I'll just have a glass of wine and forget about it," she said.

Fico's family backed her claim she was still a virgin, citing her "devout" Catholic faith and discipline with prayer every night.

"She's never had a boyfriend — I swear on my mother's grave," her brother said.

“She's a devout Catholic and prays to Padre Pio every night."
